What is the Gospel?

What is the Gospel?

This post is inspired by Session 2 from our Unashamed Student Conference, where the theme revolved around Romans 1:16: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." Today, we're exploring what the gospel truly is and why clarity matters. Whether you're a longtime believer or just curious about faith or Jesus, let's break it down step by step.

Why Clarity in the Gospel Matters

Being unashamed of the gospel starts with understanding it clearly.

You cannot share what you do not understand.

Sharing the gospel, and being unashamed of it, requires clarity. This echoes the Apostle Paul's prayer in Colossians 4:3–4: "At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison—that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak."

Paul, THE APOSTLE, even while imprisoned, begged for prayers to proclaim Christ with precision. The gospel isn't some vague feel-good message; it's the "mystery of Christ" that demands clear communication. Without clarity, we risk misrepresenting the most important news in history. Some have said the the gospel is simply Jesus...but what about Jesus? What is the good news of Jesus. Well this acrostic G.O.S.P.E.L. can help us remember the key gospel threads that hold the truth of the good news of Jesus together. So what is the gospel? Simply this that...

God
Offers
Sinful
People
Eternal
Life

Through Jesus!

At its core, the gospel can be summarized in this powerful statement: God offers sinful people eternal life through Jesus. This is a life-changing truth rooted in Scripture. Let's unpack it into FIVE ESSENTIAL GOSPEL THREADS.

1. God: The Holy, Righteous, and Loving Creator

Everything starts with God. He is holy, righteous, and loving; the Creator of all things. Romans 1:17–20 reveals this: "For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith.' For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse."

God’s righteousness demands justice against sin, but His love seeks to redeem us (John 3:16). Creation itself testifies to His power, leaving humanity without excuse for ignoring Him. Too many distort the gospel with a God who is all love and righteousness/justice. They teach that God will forgive anyone regardless of whether or not they believe in Christ. The gospel starts with a right understanding of God.

2. Offers: A Free Gift Received by Faith

Salvation isn't earned, it's offered freely. Romans 6:23 states: "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 10:13 adds: "For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." And Ephesians 2:8–9 reinforces: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

It's not about works or merit; it's a gift we receive through faith in Jesus. It is offered to all who will call upon the name of the Lord (Romans 10:13). It is available to "whoever believes" (John 3:16). But you MUST receive Christ to become a child of God (John 1:12).

3. Sinful People: We All Fall Short and Deserve Wrath

The bad news comes next: We're all sinful. Romans 3:10–12 puts it bluntly: "None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one."

Every person has sinned and deserves God's just wrath. This isn't about being "good enough," it's about recognizing our brokenness and separation from a holy God.

4. Eternal Life: Promised Hope with God Forever

Finally, believers are promised eternal life—life with God forever. Again, Romans 6:23 and John 3:16 affirm this: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." The gospel is ultimately heavenward. It is good news FOREVER.

This hope isn't just about heaven; it's about a restored relationship with God starting now and lasting eternally.

5. Through Jesus: The Payment for Our Sin

How is this eternal life offered? Well, salvation is a free gift but its price was free. It cost the blood of the Son of God.

Jesus' death on the cross paid the debt of our sin. Romans 3:23–25 explains: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood."

Additionally, 2 Corinthians 5:21 captures the exchange: "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Jesus, who was sinless, took our place, satisfying God's justice and offering us His righteousness.

Salvation only comes through Jesus. This is why it is called "the gospel of Jesus Christ." He is the only way (John 14:6) and the only Mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5).

So what is the gospel?

Simply this: God Offers Sinful People Eternal Life....THROUGH JESUS!

Have you received this good news by faith in Jesus? Have you trusted in Christ alone for salvation? Are you boldly, and unashamedly, sharing this good news with others? It is the greatest news in human history. Let's be UNASHAMED!
